At sun-drenched Hawkfield St Edwards were crowned u/16 Champions following a comprehensive win over gutsy Ardclough on a scoreline 4-12 to 0-9. Ardclough played with the aid of a strong breeze, but it was the stylish Adam Toman who opened the victors account with a free in the 8th minute. Dylan Burke with 2 and Ronan Tallon had the "Clochs" 2 up before Toman pointed again and two points from the hardworking Shaun Flynn resored the slender advantage to St Edwards. A point from Ardclough Captain Delahunt had the sides level before the decisive score of the half from Joe Toman, who netted just on the 30th minute . Ardclough to their credit had two points from Tallon and Delahunt but further points from Flynn and Adam Toman meant that St Edwards went in leading 1-16 to 0-6 and with the wind assistance in the second half!!
Ardclough started well and needed some scores to gain a foothold in the match. However in St Edwards Captain Cathal Travers they met a rock, and the outstanding skipper with great assistance from Tom Monaghen, David Murphy and Jack Travers in the half line, took all the Ardclough lads could throw at them. Adam Toman with a '45 was followd by 3 Burke points - 2 from frees and a beauty from play. Both sides squandered chances and with the match in the balance, County u/15 Joe Toman showed his talend when he scored a great goal following neat interplay with the lion hearted Conor Harris. Shaun Flynn and the impressive Liam Casserly added 2 long range points and when Joey Toman completed his tat-trick in the 25th minute, the job was done! To their credit Ardclough played to the end, and in Liam Hanley had an outstanding defender. Keeper John Nolan did well also and could not be faulted! In the final few minutes Adam Toman completed the scoring adding a further 1-2.
St Edwards deserved their victory based on discipline, team-work and support play. Congratulations to the team, mentors Jim Heslin and Phil Toman and to all involved in the Rathcoffey Juvenile section for
making this a proud day for the club.
